El diclorodifeniltricloroetà (DDT) va ser un pesticida molt popular als anys 40 i 50. Penetra l’exoesquelet de quitinosa dels insectes i els paralitza el sistema nerviós.
El problema del DDT és que és persistent i no biodegradable, per això es queda al medi ambient durant molt de temps. A més, s’acumula al greix del cos dels animals.
Tot i ser tòxic, és tan eficaç contra les malalties transmeses pels mosquits, com la malària, que encara està permès a molts llocs, on salva milions de vides.

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) was a very popular pesticide in the 40s and 50s. It penetrates the chitinose exoskeleton of insects and paralyses their nervous system.
The problem with DDT is that it’s persistent and non-biodegradable, so it stays in the environment for a long time. Additionally, it accumulates in the body fat of animals.
Despite being toxic, DDT is so effective to fight diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, like malaria, that it’s still allowed in many places, where it’s saving millions of lives.
